: Nagaland University Teachers’ Association (NUTA) has clarified that FIR against Prof. Kannan was filed under the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act, 1989, by Schedule Tribe (ST) University teachers Dr. N. Venuh and Rosemary Dzuvichu, and not by the Association. A press statement issued by NUTA president Rosemary Dzuvichu and general secretary Dr .N. Venuh stated that the FIR was filed against Kannan for instituting false, malicious, defamatory proceedings as a public servant, against the two NUTA leaders belonging to ST. Decision on future course of action of the NUTA, on illegal suspensions of its leaders by VC,would be taken after executive council meeting to be held on the February 13. The statement clarified that NUTA had filed a fresh petition with National Commission for Women and the State Commission for Women on the case of harassment at work place and not sexual harassment or assault as was reported in the local daily. The harassments included threat to fundamental right to associate, illegal suspensions, illegal cancellation of selected lady teacher in Tenyidie linguistics, termination of service while working against sanctioned post etc. The petition has been filed based on the false and defamatory reply of the VC to the Governor on these cases of harassment, whereby in his statement, he had not only defamed the complainants, but also blamed the Tenyimia People for his wrong decisions, it added. It also mentioned that earlier the NCW had taken cognizance of the NUTA petition and directed the Governor’s office for action within two weeks time on the petition filed by the NUTA. Two of the contract lady teachers who had worked for 8 and 12 years respectively in the University have been terminated. One of them is the first Naga lady archaeologist in the University who had led successful excavations of Naga history in Jotsoma and Khezakenoma. This case of harassment of lady teachers had also been brought to the notice of the Nagaland State Commission for Women in December 2009,for constituting an inquiry as all lady teachers were Nagas. Further NUTA clarified it had stated that DGP, Nagaland denied any knowledge of requisition of 30 police for Nagaland University for security guards, when contacted by the NUTA in January 2010 and not as reported. The MOU signed between University and the Security Instruction School, Rusoma was highly irregular, as the School was fictitious and non- existent. 20 security guards have been recruited from the so called school by the University in October 2009,without any advertisement, interviews or financial concurrence in connivance with University Authority. The NUTA stated that it had visited Rusoma village and confirmed the non-existence of such a school in this village. Further, NUTA clarified that Vice Chancellor issued a notification on the October 28, 2009, claiming he had shifted his office to Lumami and not on November 18 as was reported by the media.
