Meluri village council has alleged that Jessami villagers with the help of Manipur police official vehicle of DGP Manipur raided and bombarded Tizu River with explosives for fishing on January 15. A joint press note signed by Meluri Village Council chairman Rashutho, secretary Kuothosie and Head GB Kajirhu, said Jessami villagers had on many occasions in connivance with ‘armed forces’ resorted to similar bombings on Tizu and Jiji rivers and harassed, threatened and terrorized the villagers of Meluri. Further, the note said on February 8, Meluri villagers on conducting Jhum survey found that Jessami villagers had intruded beyond the demarcation points made in the agreement of June 6, 1994 between W Kanmi VCC Jessami and Leriisie VCC Meluri. Meluri village council also alleged that Jessami villagers stole timber and firewood worth crores of rupees and as a sign of disappointment Meluri villagers burnt down 20-30 stacks of firewood cut by Jessami villagers in the Jhum fields. The note declared to Jessami villagers that illegal cutting of timber, firewood, logging fishing in any manner, hunting, grazing of animals, loitering and picknicking within Meluri jurisdiction would not be tolerated and dealt with seriously and the villagers would take extreme steps to protect their traditional heritage at all costs. It further reminded the Jessami villagers that the only way for peace was to respect historical facts as distorting facts and agreements would be clear sign of ‘Breach of trust.’
