As many as 1039 AIDS patients lost their lives in Uttar Pradesh during the last calendar year, the state Assembly was informed today. There were 1039 AIDS-related deaths while about 50,000 HIV positive patients had been identified in the state from January 1 to December 31, 2008, Health Minister Anant Kumar Mishra told the House in reply to a question, stated UNI. Allahabad has the dubious distinction of having maximum AIDS patients in the state, he said, adding this was possibly due to Allahabad adjoining the Madhya Pradesh border. He claimed that the AIDS testing facilities in the state were existent in all the districts as well as in ten medical colleges where CD4 machines were available. Besides, the AIDS testing facilities were available in Lucknow, Allahabad and Bareilly jails, the Minister said. Mr Mishra said 243 special centres were functional in the state for AIDS patients. ‘’Prevention and awareness are required in AIDS cases as there is no medicine for this available anywhere,’’ he said. Replying supplementaries, the Health Minister said there was no plan of the state government to issue smart cards for AIDS patients especially sex workers.
