NC election committee clarifies

Reacting to the news item carried in this daily that was also carried in other local dailies pertaining to the alleged controversy over election of new office bearers of the Naga Council, Dimapur, the Election Committee has clarified that it was fully empowered to undertake the ‘electoral process’ by the executive committee vide resolution dated February 4 and subsequently approved by the house at the general meeting held on February 5. The committee members in a statement said the new team was formed after studying the pros and cons for equal tribal representation in the office while it also adhered to the norms and tradition practiced in the Council. The signatories comprising of convener W Mero and members Kashiho Sangtam, N M Ovung, Vikato Zhimomi and R V S Zatrong also pointed out that the election report was accepted only after a thorough deliberation and debate within the house and said the proposal was accepted by more than 2/3 majority of the house. The committee also asserted that the council had even invited the Dimapur District GB Association (DDGBA), two tribal presidents namely Dimapur Phugi Sumi Hoho and Phom Union Dimapur besides the council legal advisor Zasha Vüprü to witness the proceedings as observers. However, sources confirmed over mobile that four members from DDGBA and president of Dimapur Phugi Sumi Hoho were the only observers present.
