In yet another incident of vehicle misuse by uniformed personnel, a truck (MN01-7327) belonging to the Border Security Force (BSF) was seized, Thursday afternoon after it rammed the New Field police check post and tried to escape loaded with IMFL. However, the vehicle was later stopped at Khermahal police point by mobile police squad. Briefing media persons, SPDO (Niuland) Tokhavi Achumi disclosed that a team led by the OC, West PS, was already waiting for the vehicle after a tip off was received from reliable sources. Immediately, all the mobile squads were informed and the vehicle was finally stopped at Khermahal. On checking the vehicle, a total of 456 cases of assorted IMFL were recovered from the truck, which led to the arrest of the driver identified as Sunil Kr Singh of Imphal based 88 battalion of the BSF. Police sources added that the truck was currently stationed at BSF Transit Camp, Half Nagarjan and was on official duty to get some goods. However the driver conspired with one bootlegger identified as Shanker, based in Dimapur, and had brought the consignment from Khatkhati. The accused also confessed that he was getting a commission of Rs 35-40 per case. It may be noted that Khatkhati has become the conduit for supplying IMFL to the state and the porous inter-state boundary has only added an advantage for bootleggers. Moreover with the price of liquor reaching almost double the price than Assam, it has become a thriving business for the bootleggers.
