Several people, including policemen, were today injured and many police cars damaged in a crackdown operation against opium and poppy cultivation in Arunachals Lohit district. The Central Bureau of Narcotics assisted by the district administration, police, IRBN and CRPF personnel, have launched a massive operation against the cultivation. According to official sources, huge quantities of flowering poppy plants, stretching over tens of hectares near Indira Gandhi Government College, Airfield, Danglat, Mekaliang and Shivaji Nagar areas, were destroyed in the operation despite stiff resistance from the cultivators. Sources disclosed that in some areas, minor incidents of violence erupted after agitated cultivators, especially women, pelted the vehicle of ADC Tezu with stones causing minor damage to it. The police were later compelled to use tear gas shells for self-protection. The operation continued in spite of the inclement weather, as reported by UNI. Several cultivators of the area are involved in illegal opium cultivation in various locations of the district in spite of repeated directives issued by the administration through NGOs, PRIs since August 2008, sources added.
