The CID is on the lookout for some agents who had trafficked 76 children of Assam and Manipur to Tamil Nadu with the promise of free and better education. Official sources here said the children, all from poor families and aged between six and 15 years, were lured to two unrecognised homes in Kanyakumari and Chennai by some agents with the promise of free and better education. Of the 76 children, 52 were from Manipur and 24 from NC Hills district in Assam. The children were brought here on Thursday after they had been rescued by the Tamil Nadu Police last month. They were accompanied by policemen and officials of the Social Welfare Department of Tamil Nadu and the staff of Saranaalayam orphanage in Tirunelveli district, where the children were lodged following their rescue. The CID, which is currently probing the case, said as regards the children of NC Hills, some agents had taken them to Tamil Nadu with the consent of their parents. CID sources said the department was now trying to track down the agents. A CID team left for NC Hills on Friday to meet the children and ascertain if they were physically abused.
