Pharmacy shops in Manipur observed a total shut down Monday to protest against the hijacking of a truck loaded with life saving drugs by an underground outfit who also took away one-third of the consignment . A full loaded truck was stopped by some underground elements on February 10 last on NH-39 near Senapati Bazar and hijacked towards Lumaiphou village by suspected underground activists and later released after one third of the total cartoons of life saving drugs were offloaded. Police suspect the hijackers to be cadres of NSCN(IM) but none of the underground groups so far claimed responsibility for the hijack. Registering a strong protest against the act and stating that due to continuous problem on the NH-30, many major pharma companies were unwilling to supply life saving drugs to Manipur , general secretary of the Manipur Chemists and Druggist Association (MCDA) RK Ratankumar said. If the disturbances in the transportation of the life saving drugs continue and pharma companies stop supply to the state,it will result in severe shortage of medicines, he warned. Ratankumar also appealed to all sections not to disturb the supply of medicines to the state.
