In a shocking incident, an octogenarian and ex-serviceman was arrested by the Dimapur Women Cell led by S.I. Rose, on charges of molesting his great grand niece, a BA 1st year student. The accused-identified by police as Vinolie Mere (80)of P.Khel was arrested along with two other accomplices According to reports, the accused Vinolie, a Sena medal (gallantry) winner had served in the 5 Assam Regiment and also former convenor of the BJP in Nagaland. Police said Vinolie along with two of his daughters from the first wife along with the 17-year old grand daughter of his elder sister planned to shop in Dimapur last Saturday. However the two daughters cancelled the plan and Vinolie went ahead taking his great grand neice. It may be mentioned that the accused had married five times with ten children and many grandchildren including great grand children. After shopping in Dimapur, the duo were returning to Kohima but on the way Vinolie stopped at Jharnapani at around 5 p.m. to meet the driver of an excavator identified as Solomon (30) despite protestations by the victim. Police said that Vinolie and Solomon allegedly hatched a conspiracy to take the victim to Bokajan. After eating dinner, Vinolie told the victim they would have to spend the night in Manipuri hotel to which she refused and so both had to spend the night in the Maruti car used by them. In the early hours of Sunday, Vinolie along with the driver and the victim left for Bokajan (Mukhuti) and arrived at 6 am. They then were to the house of Solomon and together with Solomon’s father and another friend, went to eat in a hotel. The victim was protesting and asked her great grand uncle to take her back home Instead Vinolie along with his other friends had a long drinking session in one of the hotels. By 6 pm, the victim losing her patience asked her grandfather to go back home and had a heated argument with him. Later, the driver saw the victim crying and on enquiry was told that she did not want to sleep in the same room with her great grand uncle wanted to go back home. On further questioning, she said her great grand uncle had molested her. The driver took full advantage of the situation and promised to take her to a safer place. Placed in such a difficult situation, the girl reluctantly followed the driver and his co- brother, Nirmal (24), to the ‘safer place’. However, as per plan, the driver returned halfway with some excuse, thereby leaving the girl stranded with Nirmal. It was stated that Nirmal tried to molest the victim but she somehow managed to flee and ran into a house where some people were gathered for a function. The people immediately informed police who in response rushed to the spot and arrested the accused Nirmal as identified by the victim. Police also found the great grand uncle of the victim in one of the rooms in a drunken state. Vinolie managed to impress the police by speaking fluent Hindi and also proof with his documents as a retired Havildar Major of 5 Assam Regiment and also having served at Uri and Baramulla (J & K). An ID card found from his possession stated he was the Kohima district coordinator of Assam regiment ex-servicemen and member of the ex-servicemen league. Believing that he (Vinolie) was not an offender, the police allowed him to lead the convoy to the police station but on the way, he tried to speed up in order to escape. Though he was stopped yet Vinolie was allowed to go scot free due to his his ex-service tag. The girl was released after preliminary investigation by the Assam police and on reaching Dimapur, she along with her parents lodged an FIR after which Police immediately arrested Vinolie Mere from Kohima on Tuesday.
