Protests galore in Manipur

Protests galore in trouble torn Manipur Thursday as womenfolk and striking government employees, political workers and auto-drivers carried out separate protest at separate places with different slogans. Womenfolk carried out a protest rally against crimes on women, employees of the Manipur government on cease work strike marched a silent rally while BJP, Manipur Pradesh and Auto-drivers staged sit-in protest against price hike and extortion demand of militants respectively. Over 1000 womenfolk took part in the rally against crime against women on the streets of Imphal with slogans reading ‘stop violence against women’, ‘award befitting punishments to the women murderers’ and ‘protect rights to life of women in the state’. The protest rally organised by the All Manipur Nupi Marup started from Keishampat Junction at about noon and concluded at BT Road. The rally shouted not to desecrate laws to protect women in the state apart from demanding government’s appropriate action to check increasing crime against women and human traffic in the state. Speaking to reporters here at the concluding part of the rally, General Secretary of organising body, S Sorojini lamented over the recent series of rape and murder of women at separate places of the state. Crimes against women have been on the rise in the state. Employees of Manipur government also marched on the streets of Imphal with huge participation of employees of several departments now undergoing cease work strike. An estimated 6000 employees congregated at THAU Ground after the silent rally resolved to intensify the agitation by shutting down all government offices across the state and ‘jail bharo’ stir from Friday onwards. The rally was carried out under the banner of the Joint Administrative Council of All Manipur Trade Union Council and All Manipur Government Employees Organisation. Speaking at the congregation, Ch Chandramani, general secretary reaffirmed the stand of the employees to go on their strike till government fulfilled their demands. On the other hand, workers and leaders of the BJP Manipur Pradesh staged a sit-in protest pressing the state government to control hiking up of prices of the essential commodities in the state. Taking part in the sit-in protest staged at Lamlong Bazar in Imphal east, president of the state BJP unit criticized the Congress led governments both in state and Centre for not enabling to control the hiking of prices of essential commodities. He said “prices of the essential commodities are sky rocketing day by day in uncontrolled rate as state as well as state governments failed to take up appropriate action to check the same.” Meanwhile, auto-driver operating their service in Imphal staged another protest against extortion demands by militant groups at Mantripukhri, Imphal.
