Seminar at DPS

A career cum counseling workshop for class eleven and twelve students of Delhi Public School was conducted within the school premises on Saturday where Editor, Nagaland Post, Geoffrey Yaden, Wing Commander Kago Gyati (IAF), Maj Gagan Mehta from Indian Army, Prof Dr Neil of Symbiosis (Pune), Noklen C Jamir of Mari Time Institute, representatives from Avalon Aviation Institute (Dimapur) and Global Reach (Dimapur) were the resource persons. It was an informative time for the students who learned about joining different profession starting from journalism to management and defence forces. Speaking on the profession of journalism, Editor Nagaland Post Geoffrey Yaden gave a brief explanation of journalism as an important means of communication. He spoke on various career options in the media world ranging from print, audio-visual,advertising and radio broadcasting etc. Geoffrey said the ways and means including technology in mass communication continues to undergo significant changes which demanded certain skills. Journalism is synonymous with development and along with other professions, is an integral part of contemporary society, he said. He encouraged those who were interested in journalism to be suitably informed and cultivate the habit of reading as it helps in making one a thinker. He said the essence of a true journalist is one who is a thinker for the good of society. According to the Editor Nagaland Post, journalists as thinkers have an important role to play in guiding society and its system for progress.He pointed out that though writing skill was essential, it had to synergise with thoughtful analysis so as to provide the needed inputs. Though reporting on events that had taken place was basic, yet the higher aspect was on reporting on what is happening while the highest is on projecting what would happen after analyzing current events.He also said journalists also have to live according to what the virtues they espouse and be role models. A former fighter pilot, Wing Commander Kago Gyati of the Indian Air Force and Major Gagan Mehta of the Indian Army gave power point presentations on the various opportunities offered by the defence forces. They also informed the students about the various entries into the military academies of the country. Professor Dr Neil of Symbiosis, Pune, also urged the students to follow the vocation which they loved and not just because someone had imposed upon them. Pointing out that it was better to love one’s profession than losing out in the ‘rat race’, Prof Dr Neil impressed upon them to think and question the surrounding around them, Quoting from various books and philosophers, he also stated that it was not about endless but about putting it into practical use. Later, Noklen C Jamir of Mari Time Institute also gave an introduction on merchant navy as a career. He also informed that the MTI was going to set up an institute in Mokokchung in the near future inorder to facilitate enthusiasts in joining the merchant navy. Representative of Avalon Aviation Academy also gave an insight on life as a cabin crew member in the airplanes. She also explained about the various opportunities which have come up due to the boom in the aviation sector. It may be mentioned that Avalon Aviation Academy is the only institute which caters to such kind of training in the state. While the last resource person from Global Reach Dimapur explained about the galore opportunities for further studies abroad.
