Kohima Municipal Council has directed all financial establishments/restaurants/hotels and all prominent business establishments within Kohima municipality to display sign boards of “No Smoking Area” or “Smoking here is an Offence” in their respective areas for public awareness at the earliest. It also stated that the board should be displayed in prominent places. The KMC stated that the notification was carried on account of National Tobacco Control Programme scheduled on May 31, and with directive of the Deputy Commissioner Kohima under COTPA 2003. Meanwhile, KMC has directed public to clear all building materials, loose soil/earth, wastes etc dumped on the roadside in and around Kohima city within 15 days from the release of this notification. It stated that construction materials dumped on the roadside should be cleared within 24 hours. The KMC further informed the public to refrain from dumping loose soil on the dustbins, which otherwise creates inconvenience to sanitary workers. The office of KMC further urged colony panchayats, youth organizations and general public for their full cooperation in checking haphazard dumping in the colonies and also contact the KMC office (0370-2290316/2290317) for a hygienic city. The KMC cautioned that any person failing to comply with the notification would be penalized as per the provision of the law.
