The Shillong bench of Gauhati High Court has directed a college principal and vice-principal to pay a compensation of Rs 5,000 to one of its students for barring him from appearing in his exams. On February 22, Bissau College’s Principal and Vice-Principal had allegedly barred Wungnao Ngaranpam from appearing for his Accountancy and Computer Application practical examinations as he was 10 minutes late. Ngaranpam moved the court seeking justice against the college authorities. The 19-year-old student said there were other students who had reached the examination hall late, but the college authorities had only victimised him. The High Court on March 2 had directed Meghalaya Board of School Education to appear on a fresh date. In his final judgment yesterday, Justice T Vaiphei directed the Principal and the Vice-Principal to pay Rs 2,500 each to the student within a week for causing mental agony. “He (Ngaranpam) is entitled to reasonable cost to compensate him for the mental agony, loss of time as well as money caused to him by the conduct of college authorities,’’ Justice Vaiphei said.
