The killings of former KYKL cadre by combined forces of Police Commandos and Assam Rifles in alleged encounter sparked protest among the residents of Sekmaijin under Thoubal district on Monday. A former cadre of the proscribed KYKL, Chongtham Sanjoy alias Tocha alias Nahamacha alias Nanao of Sekmaijin Maning, Leikai, who had retired from the party a year ago was gunned by combined force of Thoubal police commandos and troops of 21 Assam Rifles in the wee hours on Monday. A 9 mm pistol loaded with two live rounds and a grenade was recovered from the slain cadre, police sources claimed. Briefing media persons, Addational SP claimed that the former militant was killed during a brief exchange of fire, however contradicting the statement of the police, family members alleged that Sanjoy was picked by security personnel on Sunday about 9.10 pm in a Maruti Gypsy, as he was returning home with one of his friends. “He has no connection with the outfit and was leading a normal life by engaging in cultivation,” Iboyaima, the father of the victim said. Alleging that Sanjoy was killed in a “fake encounter”, locals of Sekmaijin blocked traffic along Mayai Lambi disturbing normal traffic. Later local MLA, E Dwijamani intervened and assured the residents that an appropriate action with be taken after thorough investigation.
