A week-long disaster awareness and mitigation programme, organized by Civil Defence & Home Guards (CD & HG), Wokha is underway in Wokha district.
As part of the programme, personnel of CD & HG, Wokha conducted a two-day disaster awareness training March 18 and 19 in Chukitong where grassroots community leaders, chairmen, village council members, and GBs of Chukitong Circle comprising of six villages – Tsungiki, Koio, Mungya, Seluku, Nungying and Chukitong participated.
Speaking on the occasion, EAC Chukitong Albert Ezung expressed gratitude to CD & HG, Wokha for conducting the training in Chukitong area. He also exhorted community leaders to avail the opportunity provided and to be vigilant to assist fellowmen during times of disasters.
Enlightening the community leaders on importance and various aspects of disaster awareness and mitigation programmes, deputy controller CD and district commandant HG, Wokha Dally Jamir told the community leaders that disasters could strike anywhere, anytime without any warning. “Though disasters/earthquakes can neither be predicted nor prevented, it is still possible, with adequate preparation, to save lives. Also, chances of survival during times of disasters can be improved if people are aware and practice a series of simple measures,” he added.
The disaster awareness and mitigation programme focused on imparting training to grassroots level, NCC Bharat Scouts & Guides, sub-divisions and villages. In the training, volunteer trainees are guided through elaborate procedures like uses of ladders, what to do before, during and after earthquakes, uses of ropes, rescue by debris clearance and debris tunnelling, rescue service and composition of rescue parties and equipments needed, emergency methods of rescue, fire watching and control, and evacuation procedures amongst other important survival procedures.
Earlier, the week-long programme started with personnel of CD & HG, Wokha conducting a two-day disaster awareness training on March 16 and 17 for NCC and other students in Wokha town.
The programme will culminate on March 20 in Wokha town where members of Bharat Scouts and Guides will also be trained on disaster awareness and mitigation programme.
