In a major reprieve for Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court on Monday dismissed a PIL seeking a CBI probe into alleged expenses of about Rs 200 crore, including the currency note garland of Mayawati, during the BSP ‘maharally’ on March 15.
According to reports, three local layers, who moved the PIL in the Allahabad HC on March 18, had alleged that nearly Rs 175 crore of public money was spent by the BSP office bearers to mark the 25th foundation year of the party.
The PIL further alleged that about Rs 25 crores were spent on the garland that was made for felicitating Chief Minister Mayawati.
BP Singh Bishen, one of the petitioners, said that in the PIL, the Central and the state governments were made respondents beside BSP through its national general secretary.
BSP chief Mayawati had come under the opposition scanner for the unusual display of enormous wealth and huge wastage of public money for party affairs. She was even labelled as the ‘daughter of wealth’ in place of being the tallest Dalit icon, who boasts herself of being the ‘daughter of a Dalit’.
The BSP was strongly condemned by all political parties cutting across spectrum and a demand to probe the assets of party bearers was made to reveal the source of cash spend on the rally.
