Samajwadi Party (SP) supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav Tuesday unveiled a statue of Ram Manohar Lohia at a hospital despite police and the district administration’s attempts to prevent him from doing so.
Yadav, accompanied by hundred of supporters, showered flowers and garlanded Lohia’s statue in Gomti Nagar here on the occasion of his birth centenary, overcoming resistance from officials who claimed the party had no permission for the programme.
“They (police) are acting on the directions of the chief minister (Mayawati). She is the one who is creating problems and obstructions for us... She does not want the statue to be unveiled,” Yadav told reporters.
“It is shameful on her part. We waited for the chief minister and the government to unveil the statue at Lohia Hospital. When no one turned up, we decided to do it ourselves,” he added.
Mulayam accuses UPA of not acting on garland issue
Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav today claimed that the currency note garland presented to Mayawati at the BSP rally was worth Rs 51 crore and accused the Centre of keeping mum on the issue and not conducting a probe into it.
“The garland was made up of Rs 1000 notes and each circle contained a wad of rupees one lakh. I have confirmed information that the garland presented to Mayawati was not less than Rs 51 crore,” Mulayam said addressing Ram Manohar Lohia’s birth centenary function here.
The weight of the garland could be gauged from the fact that even six persons were finding it difficult to hold the garland, he said.
The SP supremo also claimed that the second garland offered to the BSP chief a few days after the rally was worth several crores of rupees.
“The second garland, which is being claimed to have been of Rs 18 lakh, was worth several crores of rupees,” he said.
Asserting that no person has the right to misuse the national currency, he said, “Instead of taking any action the central government is keeping mum on this issue and even the Income tax department has done nothing.”
Alleging that no effort was made to probe the source of money and find out the actual cost of the garlands, the SP supremo said, “The Centre, which can conduct probe against Lalu Prasad Yadav, Om Prakash Chautala and Mulayam Singh, is not ready to look into garland case. This is because it feels under threat from the three leaders.”
