Watsu Mungdang Wednesday organized a protest rally at the Police Point Mokokchung against violence, rape and murder of women with particular reference to the March 10, 2010 incident where a minor girl of 7 years was raped at Mangkolemba town under Mokokchung district.
After a brief meeting at the Police Point, the rallyists marched to the deputy commissioner’s office, Mokokchung and submitted a memorandum.
The Mungdang in the memorandum which was signed by its president and general secretary highlighted a list of eight cases of rape and murder from 2003 within Mokokchung district out of which in only one case (March 10, incident), the accused has been arrested while the remaining cases were still pending.
Stating that the women folk were already exhausted of all these violence and ran out its tolerance, the Mungdang stated in the memorandum, “from now onwards, we shall be compelled to take our own course on the spot either customarily or as per circumstances because in awaiting the action of so called administration of justice, the rights, reputation, career, mental, peace and decency of a woman is being destroyed.”
The rally was attended by a large number of women representatives not only from Watsu Mungdang but also from other tribes including women representatives from ENWO Mokokchung unit, Sumi women etc.
