1 held for selling dead chickens

DMC inspectors caught one meat vendor selling dressed carcass of dead chickens Thursday morning in New Market.The authorities also seized three dressed chickens from the shop of which one had died and put up for sale as slaughtered dressed meat.
Veterinary Assistant Surgeon (VAS) Dr. Inato Jimomi attached with DMC disclosed that the permit of the vendor Rahan, will be cancelled and more follow-up actions will be taken up after the CEO, DMC, arrives from Delhi. The vendor was later handed over to police and slaughtered and dressed chickens distributed to orphanages while the carcass of dead chickens was disposed off.
He also informed that a proposal was already on to certify all the meat being sold in Dimapur by the Veterinary department. The DMC has agreed to the demand of vendors to raise the price of live chicken from Rs 90 to Rs 110.
Any person convicted under the Food and Safety Standards Act 2006 for causing death by selling unsafe food could face life imprisonment and a fine of not less ten Rs 10 lakhs. Failure to adhere to the given standards not causing any injury may also invite an imprisonment of upto 6 months and a fine upto Rs 1 lakh.
