Anti-kidnap and extortion set up of the Dimapur police rescued two traders from Senjum village, Dimapur on Saturday morning. One of the abductors was injured after the police had to fire as he trying to escape. Narrating the sequence of events, SP Dimapur Liremo Lotha said that information was received on Friday afternoon that two traders, Vighan Kumar and Upendra Shah of Kohima who were coming down to Dimapur to replenish their stocks have been abducted by five miscreants at Pherima. He said that the abductors bundled the victims into an Alto car and took them away to an unknown location. Immediately, on receipt of information, a rescue team was launched but could not find the victims even till midnight. It was only on Saturday morning, one of the abductors called upon the victims’ family members through the mobile phone of one of the traders and demanded a ransom which was finally settled at Rs 2.5 lakh. The abductors then told the family members to come in an autorickshaw to ADC court and also give them the registration number of the auto. The police after getting the information deployed some Special Operation Team (SOT) personnel in the vicinity where the transaction was supposed to take place. On reaching the spot, the victims’ family members were again told to move towards St John Higher Secondary School and then towards Dilai gate and Assam. After sensing the game plan of the abductors, the police told the victims’ family members to inform the abductors that the auto did not have valid documents to enter Assam. The abductors relented and instructed them to come till Ao Kashiram gate. On reaching the spot, the abductors told the victims’ family members to stop before reaching the 24 Assam Rifles camp and instructed them to leave the money at roadside. The family members however did not agree to this. As the auto was parked, a red maruti van (NL06 2075) came and one of the abductors came out and asked them to quickly hand over the money. Immediately, the Special Cell Officials who were inside the auto came out and asked the accused not to run away but the miscreant along with another accomplice escaped taking advantage of teeming school children and bystanders. When police rushed towards the maruti van, one of the abductors who was still sitting inside scuffled with the police and tried to start the vehicle. In the process, police fired two shots injuring him on the stomach and thigh. The injured abductor who was later identified as James Ezung (26) of Mekokla village, was rushed to Shamrock hospital and later shifted to Dimapur Civil hospital, where he was stated to be out of danger. Meanwhile, the police launched a rescue operation based on the account of the injured abductor who revealed that the victims were kept near a Vodafone tower located at Senjum village. On reaching the spot and seeing that one of the rooms was locked from outside, police asked for the chowkidar, who was not present at that time. The chowkidar’s wife also feigned ignorance on the same when she was asked about the keys. Displaying presence of mind, one of the personnel immediately called the victims’ names to which when one of them responded from inside the locked room. Immediately, the door was broken open in which the two victims were found blindfolded and tied. Meanwhile, the SP said thatthe police were not going to take such kind of cases lightly saying enough was enough. He also informed that a Special set up comprising of selected officers from all the police stations have been constituted to specifically address kidnapping & extortion related cases. The SP also urged the victims’ family members to give timely information which he added would help in solving the case to a great extent. It may be mentioned that five abduction and related cases have been registered at East police station alone during the past three weeks.
