Rebels of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) on Tuesday laid multiple ambushes on security forces entering Tolen village in interior Chandel district, injuring a civilian, while a combined team of Assam Rifles and Manipur Police Commandos killed a suspected PREPAK cadre in a separate clash, officials said. Security force exchanged fire in the ambushes resulting to the heavy exchange of fire at as many as 10 places in the area at the border of three districts of Chandel, Thoubal and Ukhrul from early Tuesday. A civilian suffered a splinter injury when a bomb allegedly hurled by the AR troopers in retaliation exploded inside a house in the village. Police commandos evacuated the injured villager identified as S Augustin (37) son of Ngamsang of Meriland village at a hospital in Imphal. The first ambush took place at about 5 am in the general area of Tolen village. Ambushes were laid as many as 10 times as security forces continued their operations to flush out rebels at Tolen, Meriland and neighbouring villages of Chandel district but within the operational area of Thoubal district police. Later, it escalated upto Lungthar area of Ukhrul district at the border with Chandel and Thoubal districts with the Assam Rifles reinforced by the 21 Para-troopers and Thoubal police commandos. A highly reliable source said that five to six personnel of the AR suffered casualties while a PLA rebel was killed and three hurt. Assam Rifles authorities could not confirm the casualty but said that the operation with reinforcement was in progress till late afternoon. Police intelligence sources here said that 80 rebels with sophisticated weapons were camping in the area since the last few days. Troops of 15 Assam Rifles entered the hilly areas bordering the valley to launch counter insurgency operations to flush out armed rebels. PLA, the armed wing of the proscribed Revolutionary Front (RPF) is one of the powerful rebel groups actively operating in both the hill and valley areas of Manipur and carrying out deadly ambushes. The PLA aims to organise a revolutionary front covering the entire Northeast and unite all ethnic groups, including the Meiteis, Nagas and Kukis, to liberate Manipur. PLA, though a Meiti outfit, claims itself to be a trans-tribal organisation seeking to lead the non-Meiteis as well, according to Terrorism Portal of South Asian Intelligence Research (SAIR) analysis.
