Elaborate security arrangements have been made in Shillong, the state capital of Meghalaya ahead of the visit of UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi here on March 5. A Special Protection Group (SPG) team have already arrived here in the city to assess the security scenario, State Director General of Police, SB Kakati said. The UPA chairperson is visiting the state to inaugurate the North East Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS), the first super-speciality hospital in the region. She will also lay the foundation stone of a new Congress Bhavan named after her husband Rajiv Gandhi. Apart from her official visit, the Congress president would also address a public meeting at Polo ground here on 125 years of the Congress’ formation and visit Don Bosco Centre for Indigenous Culture, claimed to be the largest museum in Asia. Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Ghulam Nabi Azad, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region BK Handique and Union Minister of State for Water Resources Vincent H Pala would also accompany the Congress President. Gandhi’s scheduled visit coincides with the state board exams and a proposed strike called by the employees of the Shillong Municipal Board for pay revision. “We are trying to sort out the traffic arrangements and taking necessary steps to ensure that everything goes on smoothly,” Kakati said. Chief Minister DD Lapang said the entire state unit of the congress party is “delighted” that the party president together with other Union ministers would visit the state and address the public. “Although NEIGRIHMS has been operational it has not been formally inaugurated. We are optimistic that after the inauguration the functioning of the institute would be further streamlined,” Minister in-charge health,Dr Mukul Sangma added. Meanwhile, Sonia Gandhi would lay the foundation of the first full-fledged stadium in the state in Aizawl on Saturday. Gandhi would lay the foundation of the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium during her one-day visit and would return to Delhi on the same day, state Sports and Youth Services Minister Zodintluanga told PTI today. The construction of the stadium at Mualpui area inside the headquarters of the third battalion of the Mizoram Armed Police (MAP) has begun after Rs 25 crore was granted for the project by the 12th Finance Commission, he added.
