Within a span of two months, the price of betel leaf has skyrocketed affecting the wholesale suppliers, shopkeepers and consumers in Dimapur. Effective from Thursday, the price of paan has shot from Rs. 5 to Rs. 8 and consumers were left helpless but to buy the paan at whatever price the shopkeepers has set. While inquiring from betel traders, it was ascertained that the hike in betel leaf was due to complete stoppage of supply from Midnapore district in West Bengal, the lone supplier to all the north eastern states, which was hit by a drought like situation last year coupled with Cyclone Aila flooding the entire farming area. One of the traders expressed his anguish over the major loss in his business. Sources also claimed that almost 50 % paan shops have closed down now in and around Dimapur. The fate of the price of betel leaf now totally depends on rain gods in Midnapore. (Staff Reporter)
