There are reports of heavy politicking going on in the state for election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Nagaland which has been scheduled to be held on March 26. As far as the ruling DAN constituents are concerned, only the major constituent NPF is tipped to set up its own candidate, while there is no information from the opposition Congress side, according to NEPS. According to sources, the Chakhesang legislators from Phek district, all of them in the ruling DAN, wanted secretary general of the NPF, K. G. Kenye (Aza) to be the candidate for the Rajya Sabha seat. They have reportedly approached the party chief Dr. Shurhozelie to nominate him who reportedly told them that he had “no problem” with Kenye’s candidature. They also wanted former minister, Thenucho to be nominated if Kenye’s nomination was not possible. However, according to sources, the chief minister, Neiphiu Rio has politely turned down the proposal. He preferred the incumbent RS member, Khekiho Zhimomi to go for a second term. Rio reasoned that Khekiho only continued the remaining tenure left by T. R. Zeliang. The last date for nomination is March 16 and withdrawal March 19.
