NSCN (I-M) lauded the government of India for admitting “past mistakes” and extending assurance of meeting future challenges through a “serious political dialogue”. Stating this, NSCN (I-M) steering committee convener “Lt. Gen.(retd.) V.S. Atem, in an e-mail message also welcomed the “bold step” taken by government of India to resume dialogue with Nagas and the prime minister extending invitation to its “ato kilonser” Th. Muivah. Atem said both India and the Nagas must arrive at “an honorable and mutually acceptable negotiated political settlement.” He said that the NSCN(I-M) upholds the inalienable sovereign rights of the Naga people, and would negotiate in the spirit of mutual respect with the Government of India. He however said the political and territorial rights of the Nagas would not be compromised under any circumstances. He expressed the hope that all sections would exercise moderation in the larger interest of peace in the region at a critical juncture to achieve a mutually acceptable and negotiated political settlement.
