Nagaland University (NU) post graduate students’ union, Lumami (PGSU-L) Thursday observed “Black Day” at its headquarters here protesting against delay in making Lumami a functional headquarter of the NU.
PGSU-L members, who wore black arm bands and held placards which read “15 years waited, no results wedded”, “Stop talks, start works”, “Put the right thing in the right place” and the like, marched to the administrative block and submitted a memorandum to university vice-chancellor. However, the V-C was out of station.
In a memorandum that was submitted, the students quoted the directives of the union ministry of human resource development, dated January 14, 2010 instructing the shifting of interim headquarters of NU at Kohima to its designated place which was also published in local dailies.
The memorandum also quoted the press release of NU registrar Dr. P.H Naik, dated Feb 27, 2010 regarding the shifting of headquarter to Lumami by the month of Feb 2010 which was extended to April 2010, owing to financial year and other exigencies of work.
The PGSU (L) in the memorandum also added a resolution that was passed during its general body meeting held April 7 last that NU authorities complete preparatory works within stipulated time and make Lumami a functional headquarter by 3rd week of April 2010.
The PGSU (L) in the memorandum also regretted that the delay in making Lumami a functional headquarter of NU in given time frame would invite frustration and resentment among the students, staffs and teachers.
After submitting the memorandum, a meeting was held between office bearers of PGSU-L and university authorities, represented by deputy registrar.
During the course of meeting, a notification from the NU registrar was received through fax, notifying the schedule for shifting interim headquarters, Kohima to its designated headquarters at Lumami.
The schedule for the shifting includes, finance section April 13-16, 2010; administrative section, dispatch, reception April 19 and 20; examination section, April 21- 23; academic section, college development council, April 26-28; engineering section, SC/ST cell, April 29 and 30 and establishment section, transport section, registrar secretariat, May3 and 4.
The NU registrar has requested officer in-charge of respective sections to coordinate and supervise the work of shifting so as to ensure smooth movement of office materials on time.
It has also directed all staff of respective sections to make necessary preparatory work and ensure that university properties, assets, documents and records etc. under the individual’s custody were shifted to Lumami headquarters safely with greater care and protection.
Meanwhile, the students reacting to the notification said they would wait and watch till April 13-16 if notification would be implemented.
Further, the students cautioned to take their own course of action if authority failed to implement the notification by April 16, adding that they would not be held responsible for any unwanted situation that might arise.
