Training on value addition of fruits, vegetables

A one-day training programme on value addition of fruits and vegetables was conducted at Sechu village on April 9 in order to motivate and create awareness among the women folks of the area on fruits and vegetables preservations.
Delivering key note address Zhiete SMS(S& WC) emphasized the activities of the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kohima and its mandate and how agriculture breakthrough could be achieved if the community work together to preserve the old-age dignity of labour. The main resource person Keviyieno I/c Home Science division of KVK, Kohima demonstrated the method of preparing tomato sauce and method of preserving tomatoes, pickle preparation from locally available wild fruits and vegetables and the final packaging the products.
Kekriletou A.O from the district agriculture office, Kohima gave an awareness power point presentation on climate change and its impact on agriculture. He explained that due to climate change the insect infestation has increased thereby bringing loss to the farming community. He also said productivity of rice is in declining trend coupled with scanty rain, late monsoon rain compelling farmers to go for late transplanting with yet another problem of seedling shortage.
However, he said farmers were not aware of the changes taking place in the seasonal monsoon where drought has become a yearly feature, agro climatic changes giving way for increase in insect pests and rodent population.
A total number of 21 participants from Sechuma, Kiruphema Basa, Sechu (zubza) attended the training. The training programme was sponsored by ATMA Kohima.
