Jesuit Father Ambrose D’Mello, who had earlier worked in Nagaland, passed away in Guwahati on April 18 after a prolonged illness. He was 87. The funeral mass will be observed on April 21 at 10 am at the Cathedral Church in Guwahati, followed by a burial at the Jesuit Novitiate in Shillong.
Fr D’Mello was a zealous missionary in Karnataka. He served as Provincial of Karnataka Jesuits and was later appointed as the first Jesuit Provincial of India. At various other times he was Mission Superior of Jesuits working Nagaland, Regional Superior of Darjeeling Jesuits and Administrator of the Darjeeling Diocese.
Since July 1996 he had been at the Jesuit House in Guwahati, a sought after person by many bishops, priests, religious and lay-people for his ever available help and support.
