Prof. V. B. Singh, HoD of Horticulture department SASRD, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus was recently conferred as ISHRD Fellow, after a nationwide selection procedure, by the prestigious Indian Society of Horticultural Research and Development, Chaubattia, Almora, Uttarakhand, on March 21 at Dehradun for his active contribution in the frontier areas of horticultural research and development. He received the award from Dr. Romesh Pokriyal, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and felicitated by Dr. H. P. Singh, DDG Horticulture.
Prof. V. B. Singh served as Dean of SASRD, Nagaland University, Medziphema Campus from 1997-2000 and during his tenure five departments in the School were upgraded to PG programme. He has guided 35 number of M. Sc (Ag) and Ph. D students and has published 56 numbers of research papers, 35 articles, 22 Technical Reports and 3 books viz.; Fruits of North East Region (1990), Spices of India (1996) and Horticulture for Sustainable Income and Environmental Protection (2006). He has also contributed towards the establishment of various agronomic practices in spices, vegetables and plantation crops suited to rain fed hilly ecosystem.
He is also a life member as well as executive member of various academic societies in the field of horticulture and agriculture.
Prof. V. B. Singh acted as chairman and member in various academic, research, administrative and selection boards of different central universities. He was an active member in the selection and DPR preparation for the College of Horticulture and Forestry under CAU, department of Rural Development and Agriculture under NEHU and Central Institute of Horticulture under Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India. He was awarded Honour of Distinction Maharishi - Horticulture (Spices) from Society for the Protection of Environment and Sustainable Development, BHU, Varanasi in 2003. In the same year he was also awarded Certificate of Honour by Nagaland University. He is the founder and president of the Horticulture Society North East India.
