Tension prevailed along the border of Assam-Nagaland Friday after villagers from Assam and Aosenden under Mokokchung district exchanged verbal duels. The situation was, however, brought under control after the Assam police dispersed the Assamese villagers from the area.
According to a reliable source, the tension began after a series of incidents beginning March 18, when Assamese villagers burnt down an area which was to be used by Aosenden villagers for jhumming.
Later, on March 21, the Assamese villagers brought an excavator and levelled the area and also erected a bamboo fencing around it. Consequently, Aosenden villagers dismantled the bamboo fence on the ground that it was inside the village land.
Again on Mar 30, Assamese villagers damaged a tea garden of Aosenden which according to the source, was established under the NREGA scheme of Aosenden village. Villagers from the both the sides started to challenge each other on Friday leading to the standoff.
Assam police came to the spot and dispersed the Assam villagers, thereby diffusing the situation. Though the situation was under control, it was reportedly tense. The OC Mangkolemba and NAP personnel were reportedly stationed at Aosenden along with the Border Magistrate of Tsurangkong to monitor the situation.
