Reacting to the news item about damage to Dikhu Bailey bridge on March 31, executive engineer (PWD) Tuensang division, I Meren Ao, has clarified that the damage was caused not by poor maintenance as reported, but by some ‘elements’ who removed 10 steel stringers and six steel plates and submerged them in the river, causing vehicular traffic to be cut off.
He said that along with his staff he had inspected the bridge on March 30 between 4 and 5 pm and the vehicular traffic was normal, but upon receiving the news on April 1 he visited the spot and the damaged portion was repaired with the help of his staff, passengers, villagers of Longsa, and traffic was restored by 8pm. After collecting the requisite material the department repaired the remaining portion of the bridge on April 2.
He appealed to transporters and general public not to carry more than 6-7 tonnes load as the bridge was weak and old.
He further clarified that on March 31, the road between51-53 km was submerged by mud and stone due to incessant rains which was cleared with the help of 200 men headed by council chairman of Kiting village on April 1 by 2pm.
The executive engineer on behalf of the department expressed gratitude to all neighbouring villages including Kiting, Longsa, and transporters for their cooperation in repairing of bridge and clearing of the road.
