Catholic families assaulted in M’pur

Leingangching village, belonging to Sikiphung patta land, a Tangkhul Naga village is situated half way to Ukhrul from Imphal. The village was a totally American Baptist dominated area until recently.
Reportedly on May 3, at about 10.40 am, the villagers under the leadership of the headman and the chairman of the village attacked and ransacked the houses and properties of Yangmi Haorei, R. Robin, R. Moon, R. Yuimi, and R. Lungshi.
The five family members were chased out of the village, forcefully and were also threatened. The villagers also ransacked their houses and belongings were thrown on the Ukhrul-Imphal main road.
Properties amounting to Rs.3 lakhs of Yangmi, Rs. 1.5 lakhs of R. Robin, Rs. 4 lakhs of R. Moon, Rs. 1 lakh worth of R. Yangmi and Rs. 60 thousand worth of R. Lungshi were destroyed completely.
At the time of this reporting, the five families have been taking shelter at Litan. The law enforcing authorities at Litan station were intimated of the event immediately, but they remained mere onlookers to the event.
The Church authorities from the Archdiocese of Imphal and Sacred Heart Parish, Hundung have sent delegates to enquire about the well-being of the five Catholic families chased out.
However, the villagers have not allowed the families to enter the village and even the media persons were prevented from entering the village.
It may be noted that the five families were attacked after they expressed their desire to become Catholics and started attending the Catholic Church at Litan. In an earlier incident, Yangmi Haorei, who had spearheaded the move to become Catholic had been treated likewise by the villagers.
