IRCS says Red Cross emblem misused

Disseminating information on usage of Red Cross emblem, the Indian Red Cross Society, (IRCS) Nagaland State Branch on Thursday said that Red Cross emblem was misused in the state. It stated that the public have not learned sufficiently on the Red Cross emblem and its use despite the Red Cross emblem campaign which since 2001 in Nagaland.
Stating this at a press conference held at Red Cross Building, Dr. R. Zinyu, MC member of IRCSN, stated that the emblem- Red Cross on white background was used only by authorized organizations or people to protect international humanitarian law as per the Geneva Conventions Act 1960. However he said that some medical doctors and police personnel were still ignorant about the use and abuse of the Red Cross emblem.
While urging the need to create more awareness to police jawans and doctors, Dr. Zinyu informed that with the starting of the Red Cross Emblem in Nagaland in 2001, dissemination programmes had been conducted with police officers. Dr. Zinyu also said that Nagaland was the second state in the country to launch the Red Cross emblem campaign after Jammu and Kashmir. He informed that campaign with pharmacists in Nagaland was a total success as none of the drug stores carry the emblem.
Dr. Zinyu also pointed out cases of Red Cross emblem abuse and misuse in the form of transportation of arms and ammunitions, drugs, liquor etc. He stated that if such anti-social activities were checked, law and order situation in the state would be improved.
Dwelling on the significance of Red Cross emblem, Dr. S.I. Tushi Ao, MC member IRCSN, said that the Red Cross emblem was a neutral sign that confers protection to army medical services and members of the Red Cross movement. He stated that the emblem was used in the form of protective use to mark medical and religious personnel and equipment in armed conflicts, military medical services, and means of transport etc; while indicative use serve to show person or objects linked to the movement such as employees, youth red Cross or Red Crescent youth. He however apprised that the emblem is used only when on duty or when authorized.
The press conference was also attended by Zakie Kire, general secretary of IRCSN and Kholie Dolf, member; while H.Hesso, vice chairman IRCSN chaired the conference.
