Two residents of Dimapur, including a woman employee of the Nagaland government, were arrested from the New Jalpaiguri station last evening with fake notes totalling Rs 80,000.
The Siliguri division of customs along with the directorate of revenue intelligence had raided the Kanchenjungha Express, said the fake notes were procured from Bangladesh and collected from Malda.
Commissioner of customs, siliguri, S.K. Das said the woman who was arrested is an employee of the animal husbandry department, Nagaland and one Biswajit Mushahari, associated with a church in Dimapur
“Based on specific information, we had raided the Guwahati-bound Kanchenjungha Express at NJP. The two were arrested from berths 27 and 28 in S-4 compartment,” Das said.
The fake notes were in the woman’s bag, he said. “When we wanted to search their luggage, she was reluctant. Later, 160 fake notes of Rs 500 denomination were recovered from her possession.”
According to The Telegraph reports, preliminary interrogations revealed the duo had stayed at a hotel on Station Road in Malda yesterday and collected the fake notes from two persons of the locality.
“We have got the names of the two who had handed over the notes to them. We are, however, yet to find out whether they were just going to deliver them or were members of an organized racket,” Das said.
“Although the duo said this was their first offence, we are not ruling out the possibility of their greater role in the racket,” sources in the custom department said.
