The wife of a millionaire Labour peer and donor has lost her sight in one eye after she fell on a road near the family’s home.
Lady Aruna Paul, 74, stumbled on a kerb as she was being picked up from a doctor’s appointment.
She was taken to London’s University College Hospital and later transferred to the Western Eye Hospital for an operation on her eye, which was bleeding heavily.
Lady Paul is now recovering at home while doctors wait for the wound to heal before confirming if the damage is permanent.
Her steel-tycoon husband Lord Swraj Paul, 79, is worth £550 million and is a close friend of Gordon Brown.
The accident happened near an exclusive block in Portland Place, Central London, where the family live in ten flats.
Lord Paul recently paid back £38,000 in parliamentary expenses. He had claimed his main home was a flat in Oxfordshire – in which he never slept – despite his London home.
He donated £400,000 to the Labour Party through his company and £45,000 to Mr Brown’s leadership campaign.
Last night he said: ‘It has shaken us all up, especially the possibility she might lose the sight in the eye permanently.’
