The pressure on Okram Ibobi Singh’s government increases with the Zeliangrong Interim Body (ZIB) joining hands with those supporting the NSCN (I-M) general secretary, Th. Muivah’s visit to his native village.
Breaking their silence on the present imbroglio, the Zeliangrong Interim Body on Wednesday declared its support to Muivah’s homecoming. “We have resolved to welcome the visit of NSCN (I-M) leader. He must not only come to Ukhrul but also tour other Naga areas,” ZIB convenor, Ningthaodai Gonmei told this correspondent from Tamenglong. He said the decision to “welcome and openly support Muivah’s homecoming” was resolved at an organizational meeting held recently.
ZIB questioned the Manipur government’s defiant stance on Muivah’s visit. “Why is Ibobi government not allowing a person (Muivah) who wants to visit his birthplace and meet his own people? Is Manipur government bigger than the government of India?” it asked.
It may be mentioned that ZIB was formed after the Zeliangrong Baudi and Zeliangrong Union became defunct, and is presently entrusted to reorganize the apex organization for Zeme, Liangmei, Rongmei and Inpui tribes living in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam. The declaration of the Zeliangrong body, who earlier maintained a mute stance on the issue, came as a morale booster to the other Naga civil societies contesting the “stand” of Manipur government.
