In honour of the two students who were killed during Manipur police firing at Mao Gate on May 6, the Naga People’s Organization (NPO) Senapati District has declared the month of May as the “Month of Mourning.”
NPO president, M. Dili in a statement said the decision was taken during a joint emergency executive council and its working committee meeting and declared May 6-31 as the period of mourning.
“The said declaration was resolved to honor the tragic loss of 2(two) beloved students Late Chakho, son of Neli and Loshou son of Daikho both from Kalinamai Village, Senapati District at Mao-gate on 6th May, 2010 in the provoking firing by the Manipur Police Commandos/IRBs,” the NPO said. Declaring the month as “Days of Gena,” the NPO said during these days, the general public of Senapati district would abstain from normal manual works and maintain strict free movement in and around the district.
People would also abstain from entertainment programmes, merry-makings and celebrations. Besides, all shops and business establishments would open at half-shutter and operate for few restricted hours, the NPO said. During this period, Churches/religious institutions would pray and fast for the departed souls. The NPO said the declaration should be strictly maintained by the general public of Senapati district.
