‘Vünglangh Manliüng’- a daily newspaper in Phom dialect was launched on Saturday by parliamentary secretary for Transport & Communication and Mechanical Engineering, Dako Phom at Saramati Hotel Dimapur.
Addressing the launch of the paper, the editor, H. Lemei (Arenla) Phom dedicated Vünglangh Manliüng to her father, S. Hebong Phom and said it has been launched with a view to provide information suitable for both old and young and to act as an ‘eye opener’ to the Phom community. She also invited views and suggestions from the community as the daily takes on its venture.
Speaking on the occasion, Dako Phom stated that the role of newspapers not only developed the individual outlook but also act as a guardian of public interest. Stating that only 40% of the Phom community could read English, the parliamentary secretary asserted that it was indeed an important occasion for the community as he felt the launch of Vünglangh Manliüng would benefit and educate 90-95%. The chief guest lauded Arenla Phom on the achievement of independently launching the ‘much awaited’ daily in Phom dialect.
He also encouraged the editor that the paper would go a long way in overcoming the barriers of the language with guidance from Phom Literary Board and community elders. Others who spoke at the programme included Phom Literary Board chairman, Imdong Phom and North East VBS Ministry director, H. Hammei Phom.
It may be mentioned that besides newspapers published in Tenyidie, Ao and Sema language, Vünglangh Manliüng has become the fourth newspaper in Naga tribal dialect to be published.
