World Veterinary Day observed

Dog Show, art competition, seminar, free anti-rabies vaccination marked the celebration of World Veterinary Day on the theme “One World, One Health” at Mission Compound Kohima on Saturday. Minister for Planning and Coordination, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry, Parliamentary Affairs and Evaluation T.R. Zeliang graced the occasion as chief guest. He said trading of animals within the state could be an important business venture to raise the state’s economy.
He urged animal lovers to multiply the number of domestic animals in the state through means of trading. As Year of Entrepreneurs, he minister encouraged the gathering to take up creative professions and not just search for white collared jobs. Pointing out that India was aiming to be one of the richest countries in the world by 2020-25, Zeliang called upon the people to do their bid towards this goal.
Altogether 155 students from various schools in Kohima participated in the art competition. Khevito T. Shohe, Dr. Amen Imchen and Seyie Tepa were the judges for the competition. The winners in the senior were awarded with cash prizes of Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000, Rs. 2000 and Rs. 1000 respectively for the first four winners and Rs. 500 each for three consolation winners along with certificates and certificates. In the juniors’ category, the first four winners were awarded with Rs. 3000, Rs. 2000, Rs.1000 and Rs. 500 and Rs. 300 for three consolation winners along with certificate. A certificate of excellence was also presented to the wining schools.
In the dog show, 57 dogs of different breed participated, including Dalmatian, St. Bernard, Chowchow, Basset-Hound, Boxer Great Dane, Pug etc. 22 dogs were put under pedigree category, 32 under crossed breeds’ category and three under local category.
Judges for the show included Dr. Ketholenuo, Dr. Asalie and Dr. Sungkum. Cash prizes of Rs. 5000, Rs. 3000, Rs. 2000 and Rs. 1000 respectively for the first four winners and Rs. 500 each for three consolation winners along with certificates were awarded to winning dogs of all three categories.
Free dog medicines were distributed while free anti-rabies vaccination service was also provided. Later in the evening, a seminar on “One World, One Health” was held at Hotel Japfü, with Dr. V. Sekhose, principal director, Health and Family Welfare, and Prof. Dr. S.P. Singh, president, Indian Association of Veterinary Public Health Specialists as the resource persons.
