SMS of a major earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter Scale, likely to hit the north east at 11 p.m.Monday created sensation and panic throughout the state. The rumor spread through widely circulated SMS chain informing that the seismological department for the northeast, Shillong had directed the people of the northeast to stay outdoors as there would be a major earthquake measuring 5.7 Richter scale likely to hit the northeast on Monday night 11.17pm. Although the source of the news could not be verified, it had the impact since the region has been experiencing a series of tremors and more so as the region is prone to mild tremors owing to the movement of the tectonic plates. When officials of Geology & Mining were contacted, Joint Director A K Lotha informed that an earthquake can never be predicted including the time and place of occurrence. “It’s just a rumour” he added. Meanwhile sources added that the rumor created panic among the denizens of Shillong where people collected blankets and food, in case of such a major earthquake. The NE region of India, lying in the highest seismic risk zone, has experienced some of the world’s worst earthquakes. The 1897 quake that occurred in the Shillong plateau had left 1542 people dead. In the year 1897 and 1950, Assam too had experienced high intensity earthquakes. (Staff Reporter)
