An army jawan, belonging to 12 Madras Regiment, reportedly shot dead two of his junior commissioned officers (JCOs) posted at Khengjang village, Churachandpur district, Manipur late Monday night, an official said Tuesday.
The accused jawan identified as one rifleman Ambati (Rif no. 2606612) barged into the room where JCO Mithu Jaya (JCO no. 436737-M) of Tamil Nadu and Thanapan (no. 440311-K) of Kerala were staying and shot them at close range with his service rifle, police source said quoting a complaint lodged by authority of Madras Regiment.
The shooting incident took place last night, at around 10:30 p.m., and the accused rifleman, who attempted to escape from the camp, was overpowered by personnel in the camp and later handed over to Churachandpur police station at around 12:30 a.m., police said.
The Army had instituted a court of inquiry into the incident to ascertain the motive behind the attack on army officers, a PIB (Defense Wing), Imphal source here said.
The bodies of two officers, who died on the spot, were transferred to RIMS morgue, Imphal and conducted postmortem today.
The mortal remains of the officers would be sent to their respective homes tomorrow after completing formality, the source said.
Police suspect non-granting of leave behind the drastic decision to kill the officer.
Monday’s incident was the seventh such instances where personnel of central security forces deployed in Manipur for counter insurgency killed their colleagues for one or other reason since 2005.
