Reacting on the state government’s reported move to rename Dimapur, the Kachari Tribal Council Nagaland (KTCN) on Saturday decided to submit a memorandum to Nagaland chief minister, Neiphiu Rio through the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur for revocation of the proposal. This was resolved at a meeting convened by the council on May 1 at Dhansiripar village in a bid to draw public opinion. Observing that ‘Dimapur’ was derived from a Kachari word representing an ancient name of the Kachari kingdom and also since Kacharis are among the 16 recognized tribes of Nagaland, the council affirmed that the name ‘Dimapur’ should remain unchanged as it held historical significance for the people. KTCN also appealed to all tribal Hoho’s and other communities of Dimapur to extend their support to preserve the historical name of Dimapur. The meeting was attended by members of Minority Forum Dimapur-III, Garo Tribal Council, Indigenous Gorkha Community, Domicile Muslim Community, women leaders, student leaders, youths, GBs, VCCs and senior citizens of Dimapur.
