Assam Rifles stationed along with state police apprehended three cadres of NSCN (I-M) and four civilian conduits during an operation at Khonsa in Tirap district of Arunachal Pradesh on Monday night.
The arrested cadres included ‘sergeant major’ Athot, a self- acclaimed area commander of Khonsa.
According to official sources, a commando platoon assisted by a crack team of the district police cordoned off Khonsa basti on the outskirts of the town and searched the entire village. A person tried to escape on a motorcycle but was chased and overpowered by the security personnel, reported UNI.
A pistol was recovered from his possession. On interrogation, the apprehended cadre confessed to being the ‘area commander’ and identified himself as Athot, which was corroborated by several civilians of the town.
His interrogation led to the second search where two hardcore over ground workers, who were actively involved in harbouring and facilitating the cadres to operate in the area, were apprehended.
Further interrogation led the team to arrest another two cadres in the wee hours yesterday and recovery of two pistols from their possession.
All the three cadres and the civilian conduits, who are called OGWs (over ground workers) in army language, were questioned and it emerged that one Roshanlal Meena, a local businessman, was their major conduit who collected tax on behalf of NSCN (I-M).
