Bamboo mat business booming in Mkg

Mokokchung district endowed with varieties of bamboos is emerging major supplier of bamboo mat to Ply Board Industries in the country.
Considering high demand of the ready-made bamboo mat by Ply Board Industry in Arunachal Pradesh, Anaki cluster comprising six villages under Tuli Sub-division engaged mat making has been supplying its products in the district.
An official bulletin however stated that supply of mat from Anaki cluster was far below the demand. According to Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency (NBDA) official, Arunachal Pradesh Ply Board Industry placed a demand of 20,000 (4’X8’) feet bamboo mat per month. But Anaki cluster, could send only six thousand per month.
Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency official further said a Ply Industry based in Mumbai also placed a demand of 50,000 bamboo mat per month.
Thus, to meet the high demand and to boost rural economy, the Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency was making all out efforts to put villagers in the bamboo mat business.
The Nagaland Bamboo Development Agency official inform, another bamboo mat making cluster was launched in Changkikong range comprising six villages. NBDA official, Alemla Aier said first demonstration on bamboo mat making to fulfil the specification of the industry was held at Khar village on May 27 where hundred village experts in bamboo splits attended the training.
The demonstration was conducted by five experts from Anaki cluster who were now engaged in supplying the mat to Arunachal Pradesh.
After the demonstration NBDA provided Rs.80, 000/- to Khar Village Council as revolving fund to start making bamboo mat as per specification.
