A 72-hour bandh will come into effect from 5 a.m. Monday Dimapur police sources said Sunday. Further, DC Dimapur Maongwati Aier confirmed the report, quoting his Karbi Anglong counterpart at Diphu. Maong said the bandh was called basically by three groups Karbi Anglong-based organization.
Though the reasons for the bandh was not known, those in Nagaland perceived it as enforcement of the threat of economic blockade on Nagaland by 12 Karbi Anglong-based organizations belonging to various tribes and communities, spearheaded by the All Assam Manipur Students Union, Assam. The organizations had issued a 100-hour ultimatum on the NSF to lift the ongoing economic blockage on Manipur at the NH 39 and 53 on Wednesday.
NGA opposes bandh
Meanwhile, reacting to media reports that a certain section of Nepali community of Karbi Anglong district were roped to issue threat of a counter economic blockade on Nagaland by All Assam Manipuri Students’ Union (AAMSU), the Nagaland Gorkha Association (NGA) on Sunday urged all Nepalis/Gorkhas to stay away from such “divisive” elements.
A joint press release issued by NGA president, B. B. Gurung and general secretary, P. Aley opined that the a counter economic blockade on Nagaland, was not the means to solve the existing impasse between Nagaland and Manipur. The NGA has therefore, urged upon all members of the community to abstain from participating or supporting the bandh and instead, to concentrate on areas where they could contribute towards a peaceful coexistence.
