The Meghalaya government has issued a red corner notice against New Delhi-based publisher Indra Kumar Jha for depicting Jesus Christ holding a beer can and a cigarette on the other in a school book.
“We have declared as absconder and a red corner has been issued against him for his arrest,” Meghalaya Education Minister M Ampareen Lyngdoh told the Assembly during the Question Hour. The image appeared in a handwriting book for children in church-run schools where it was used to illustrate the letter "I" for the word "Idol".
Lyngdoh said that the state government has registered a case against the publisher in case No. 9(2)10 U/S295A IPC under Lumdiengjri police station and the case is still in progress.
Lyngdoh also informed the House that the text book was not prescribed by the Meghalaya Board of School Education since the Board has given the option to non government primary and upper primary schools in Meghalaya to either use the textbooks of the comparable quality from reputed publishers subject to the condition that such schools follow the prescribed curriculum and syllabi of the Board.
The Roman Catholic Church in India has banned all textbooks by Skyline Publications from all its schools.
The Meghalaya government has confiscated a large number of books which printed the blasphemous picture
