Manipur minister’s house burned down

Residence of the Manipur Tribal Development minister, DD Thaisii at TNK village in Senapati district was set on fire by miscreants Tuesday night, reducing properties worth several lakhs of rupees to ashes.
The first and second floor of the multi-storey building and two other thouses were totally gutted in the fire incident that took place at about 12.30 am. Police said no casualty was reported.
Police could not immediately estimate the properties lost in the arson but put the damage of properties to the tune of several lakhs as besides the structures, all the furniture and household items including luxury items were left only as residues.
Police suspected the arson act to be related with the boycott to the ADC elections which coincided with the minister’s refusal to tender resignation as an MLA of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, as a representative of the Naga people.
DD Thaisii was the only Congress candidate who won election from Naga dominated Senapati district in the last Assembly election held in 2007.
He defeated his nearest UNC backed independent candidate in the fray and became the Despite the threats, boycott and bandhs, 60 to 80 % turn out of voters in some polling stations were reported in Senapati district even though no vote caste was registered in some of the polling stations.
Meanwhile, more than 20 people were injured and three vehicles burnt in Ukhrul on Wednesday night after IRB resorted to firing at volunteers enforcing the bandh in and around town.
The incident happened at around 8 p.m when volunteers were enforcing 72 hours blockade in the district protesting the autonomous district council election. Police attempted to break the blockade by firing tear gas shells in which more than 15 women were injured and some youths assaulted with rifle butts.
On hearing of the incident, around one thousand people with torches attempted to storm the police headquarters.Police retaliated by firing tear gas shells including weapons fire. At around 9 p.m DC Ashok Kumar rushed to the police Hq but his vehicle (Bolero) along with two security vehicles were stopped short at MG Avenue near the police Hq.
However, the DC escorted by his security personnel managed to escape to the police headquarters.Police resorted to firing tear gas shells and weapons fire which went on from 8 p.m. till 10.3. p.m.
The District council office was also burnt down by the miscreant at around 10:45 p.m.
Some of the injured were admitted to the district hospital. The Tangkhul civil societies have strongly condemned the excesses of police perpetrated on volunteers and demanded that the state government immediately withdraw IRB from Ukhrul.
