When nothing was seen taken up to tackle the economic blockade on the highways as it entered its 55th day on Friday, the Senior Citizens’ Forum, Mayang Imphal questioned the state and the central government.
As an result of the economic blockade which commenced from April 12 last, prices of all essential commodities have sky rocketed and is now beyond the capacity to be afforded by the people.
The statement by its president RK Brajeshwar asked whether the government would be satisfied when citizens die of starvation and questioned the silence of the 60 MLAs of the state.
It also recalled that when economic blockade was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir, the central government intervened stating that it was violation of rights to life of the people and the blockade was forced to withdraw within 24 hours while in the state of Manipur even though the blockade had enter its second month, the Centre was taking up no apparent action to end the same.
The forum said that the prevailing situation called for a unified effort among the people of all sections of the society to find a way to end the blockade.
The forum also criticized NSCN (IM) leader Th Muivah and stated that if Muivah was “a man of politics”, he must know the suffering of the Naga people.
