On the occasion of 58th Phom day celebration on June 6, the Dimapur Phom Union (DPU) has wished all the Phom in particular and the Nagas in general a ‘solemn and happy Phom day’ and also hoped for the success of road show to be held in Longleng Town coinciding with Phom day. In a press communiqué N.T. Thamlong, vice president and Philip Buchem, general secretary DPU said, Phom day falls on Sunday and that it would not be organizing separate programme to celebrate this event but would observe it as a day of prayer and fasting for all Phom people residing in Dimapur district and conduct a special prayer session during devotional service.
It may be mentioned that the Phom day has a great significance especially for the Phom people because it was on this day June 6, 1952 when the village chief and elders of all Phom villages gathered in Longleng and made a solemn pledge to end the practice of head hunting and violence among Phom people.
This solemn pledge has withstood all the provocation, intimidation, trials and tribulations and even to this day the Phom people stand united on the pledge made by their forefathers and maintain peace and harmony among villagers and people. The union further called upon all the organizations, forums and even state government to recognize the importance of Phom day and join the participation so that the message of peace was spread to every nook and corner of the state.
