AIDS workshop concludes

The two- day training workshop on “prevention of HIV and AIDS in the world of work” organized by V. V. Giri, National Labour Institute, Noida in collaboration with Labour department, Nagaland & Nagaland State AIDS Controls Society concluded Friday at Millennium Hotel Kohima with chief guest Dr. Damodar Bachani, deputy director general, NACO.
Speaking at the valedictory function, Dr. Bachani said HIV and AIDS was not only a health problems but also a socio-economic problem and that lack of awareness often led to discrimination among working sectors, for which he urged organized sectors to come up with more awareness among working people and laborers.
Earlier, President of Kohima Press Club K. V. Nurumi while sharing his view on the topic “Awareness and prevention of HIV and AIDS in Nagaland and the way forward” said media was a vehicle for any form of communication and could reach out to all sections of people including labour, both organized and unorganized sectors. He also stressed on the need of highlighting achievements of the concerned department towards their fight against HIV and AIDS and updating the media about the progress made under various programmes.
He also said effective media coverage could personalize the issue of HIV, encourage people to interact and share their views which in turn would prompt the government to prioritize the issue of HIV and AIDS in the social and political agenda.
Besides topics on various issue like HIV and AIDS related stigma and discrimination in Nagaland with focus in work place, developing a strategy for non-discrimination and protection of People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLHAs) were presented by resource persons Dr. P. Ngully, Chairman, KRIPA Foundation and Lydia, lawyers Collectives respectively.
